How to Back Up Your iPhone or Android Before a Repair

The vast majority of repairs — screens, batteries, charging ports — never affect your data at all. But backing up first is five minutes of cheap insurance, and it is good practice any time someone other than you handles your phone. Here is how.

On iPhone

• iCloud: Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now (connect to Wi-Fi first).
• To a computer: connect to a Mac or PC and back up through Finder (Mac) or the Apple Devices app (Windows). A computer backup can include more data than iCloud's free tier allows.

On Android

• Google account: Settings → Google → Backup → Back up now. This covers app data, contacts, settings and more.
• Photos: make sure Google Photos backup is switched on so your pictures are safe in the cloud.
• Samsung devices can also use Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch for a fuller backup.

Quick checklist before handing it over

• Backup completed and confirmed.
• Note down (or remember) your screen passcode — we may need it to test the repair.
• Remove any SIM or memory card if you wish to keep it with you.
• Turn off "Find My" / activation lock only if asked — for most repairs this is not necessary.
