Phone Won’t Charge? 5 Common Causes and the Quick Fixes

A phone that refuses to charge is stressful, but the cause is often simpler — and cheaper to fix — than people fear. Work through these five in order before assuming the worst.

1. Lint in the charging port

This is the number-one cause we see. Pockets and bags pack fluff into the charging port until the cable can no longer make a proper connection. A careful clean with the right tools often fixes it completely. Never jab at it with a pin — you can damage the pins inside.

2. A worn or damaged cable

Cables fail far more often than phones. Frayed ends, bent connectors and cheap third-party leads all cause intermittent charging. Try a different known-good cable and plug before anything else.

3. A tired plug or USB port

Wall adapters and laptop USB ports wear out too. If a different charger works, the original plug was the problem.

4. A failing charging port

If cleaning and new cables do not help, the port itself may be worn or loose — especially on phones a few years old. A charging-port replacement is a common, affordable repair and usually done the same day.

5. A degraded battery

If the phone charges but drains almost instantly, or shuts down at 30%, the battery — not the charging — is the issue. Batteries are consumable and lose capacity after a few hundred cycles.
