Water-Damaged Phone? What to Do in the First Hour

Liquid and electronics are a bad mix, but a soaked phone is not automatically a dead phone — if you act quickly and avoid the classic mistakes. Here is what to do, and just as importantly, what not to do.

Do this straight away

• Get it out of the liquid and power it off. Do not check if it still works — using it while wet is how short circuits happen.
• Dry the outside with a soft cloth and tip out any liquid from the ports gently.
• Do not charge it. Putting power through a wet phone is one of the fastest ways to kill it for good.
• Leave it switched off and bring it for a proper internal check as soon as you can.

The myths that make it worse

• Rice does not work. It is too slow to draw out internal moisture and dust can get into the ports. By the time rice "might" help, corrosion has already started.
• Hairdryers are dangerous. Heat pushes moisture deeper and can warp components and adhesive.
• "It turned back on, so it's fine" is a trap. Corrosion from water damage can develop over days, killing the phone later even though it seemed okay at first.

The real danger from liquid is corrosion on the internal board. A proper repair means opening the device, cleaning the board correctly and checking each component before it does lasting harm. The sooner this happens, the better the chances.
